Good Riddance Jackass

May 15, 2007

It’s always sad when someone dies. But while it’s sad to lose any life, a man of such active hate deserves no good will in death. I don’t come to praise or bury the now-deceased Jerry Falwell, I just thought I’d note that the world lost a real jackass today.

“I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say ‘you helped this happen.'” –J. Falwell

“The idea that religion and politics don’t mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country”

Jerry Falwell

“The whole (global warming) thing is created to destroy America’s free enterprise system and our economic stability”

Jerry Falwell

“What we’ve worked on for 30 years, to mobilize people of faith and value in this country, what we’ve done through these years is coming to culmination right now.”

Jerry Falwell

The E. coli Free Market

January 1, 2007

The E. Coli outbreak is caused by the deregualtion and mass production of food by corporate agriculture’s economies of scale.

By Joel Bleifuss

The origin of the recent outbreak is thought to be cattle that are fed a grain-based diet—more precisely the manure they produce. As researchers at Cornell University discovered in 1998, cows that graze or eat hay, as nature intended, do not produce the pathogen in their stomach.

The real culprit, in this case, is corporate agriculture, which uses economies of scale to mass produce food. And while the consumer may benefit in the form of lower prices, America’s agricultural communities bear the brunt of this consolidation.

Santorum helps release nuclear secrets

November 4, 2006

You may have seen the New York Times story about recently declassified Iraqi documents that the Bush Administration put on a Web site as a result of pressure from Congressional Republicans, including Rick Santorum. It turns out some of those hastily declassified documents contained information about nuclear research that basically laid out how to create a nuclear bomb.In light of those facts, we thought you might like to see the video of Rick’s announcement of the web site, in which he takes credit for getting the documents made public and says he’s not concerned that any of the information is sensitive, even though he admits to having “no idea” what’s contained in the documents. Brilliant! Here’s the video (partial transcript below).

We’re trying to assure that all the information that we have gathered from the previous regime in Iraq, Saddam Hussein’s regime, is being made available to the public as quickly as possible. With a bias toward making this information unclassified and released.

And he [President Bush] assured me that they were going to be releasing documents in a steady stream over a period of time. Not picking and choosing documents, but releasing documents, a lot of which will not have been interpreted, out into the Internet for people to see. I think that is a wonderful step forward. There is no question that, as a result of that release, we will be able to get that information analyzed by people all over the world.

All of this information is at least three years old and a lot of this information is much older than that. And so there seems to very little concern, at least from my perspective, that this information is sensitive from a classification point of view.

The American public has a right to know this information. We have no idea, you know, what – given the volumes of documents we’re talking about here, 48,000 boxes of documents – what’s in there. But we think it’s important that the public get a view.

November 3, 2006

Ted Haggard, one of the most prominent and politically powerful evangelical pastors in the country, resigned today as president of the 30-million-member National Association of Evangelicals “amid allegations that he carried on a three-year sexual relationship with a male prostitute.” (Details HERE.) The AP reports:

Haggard…also stepped down as senior pastor at his 14,000-member New Life Church pending an investigation by a church panel, saying he could “not continue to minister under the cloud created by the accusations.”

“I am voluntarily stepping aside from leadership so that the overseer process can be allowed to proceed with integrity,” Haggard said in a written statement. “I hope to be able to discuss this matter in more detail at a later date. In the interim, I will seek both spiritual advice and guidance.”

The former prostitute who made the accusations, Mike Jones, also today showed the Denver Post letters and voicemails allegedly sent by Haggard:

Jones says he was contacted three years ago by Haggard for sex – he thinks through a gay newspaper advertisement or an online ad he posted on rentboy.com.

Today, Jones showed the Denver Post an envelope addressed to him from “Art,” a name Jones says Haggard used – sent from an address in Colorado Springs. Jones said the envelope came to him with two $100 bills inside.

Jones also played a recording of a voicemail left for Jones from “Art.” Jones refused to reveal what the topic of the voicemail was about because there could be legal problems and he wants to consult with an attorney.

Haggard has called homosexuality a “sin” and “devastating for the children of our nation and for the future of Western civilization.”
