America’s Neo-Tough Guys – And their mommies and daddies. Article by Glenn Greenwald.

January 24, 2007

Prompted by my post from yesterday about Bill Kristol and Fred Kagan, I want to raise an issue which I think receives far less attention than its significance warrants. Among the country’s most influential neoconservatives, one finds extremely pervasive nepotism. Beyond that, a conspicuously high percentage of them have had their careers created, shaped and fueled by their parents. They have been dependent upon the accomplishments of their parents, especially their fathers, whose political views they end up reciting almost without deviation. Just look at the intertwined axis that spawned the two leading “surge” advocates, Kristol and Kagan:

Bill Kristol’s parents are Irving Kristol, the so-called “godfather of neoconservatism,” and Gertrude Himmelfarb, whose defining political act was an homage paid at the AEI to the virtues of Victorian morality. Bill followed in his parents’ footsteps almost completely – the same career, the same political circles, the same exact political beliefs as his mother and father, and had his career shaped by them from the start.

The State of the Union (the man with the reverse midas touch) everything he touches turns to shit

January 24, 2007

The state of the union is sad and shattered. After six years, the man who peddled himself as a “uniter” has torn our nation apart and ripped us away from the international community.

The Washington media spent the holidays trying to guess what the President’s new plan for Iraq might be. Meanwhile in the back rooms of the White House Karl Rove and White House Chief of Staff, Josh Bolten were doing what any world-class chess player does when facing defeat — plot a series of aggressive moves to throw their opponent off balance in the hopes of regaining the initiative.

How do I know this? Well, since God only talks to Rev. Pat Robertson – and, when He can’t get through to Pat, George W. Bush – I didn’t get it from Him. No it came to me in this news flash late yesterday:

The E. coli Free Market

January 1, 2007

The E. Coli outbreak is caused by the deregualtion and mass production of food by corporate agriculture’s economies of scale.

By Joel Bleifuss

The origin of the recent outbreak is thought to be cattle that are fed a grain-based diet—more precisely the manure they produce. As researchers at Cornell University discovered in 1998, cows that graze or eat hay, as nature intended, do not produce the pathogen in their stomach.

The real culprit, in this case, is corporate agriculture, which uses economies of scale to mass produce food. And while the consumer may benefit in the form of lower prices, America’s agricultural communities bear the brunt of this consolidation.
